The work

You produce and evaluate the artifacts a public health communications office actually ships: a plain-language fact sheet at a sixth-grade reading level, a holding statement for a cluster of cases with incomplete lab confirmation, a talking points doc for a health officer facing press, a slide deck briefing county stakeholders, a spreadsheet tracking campaign reach by channel and ZIP code. Some tasks start from a prompt and a blank file. Others hand you a model-generated draft and ask you to judge it — flag where it overstates certainty, where it buries the action step, where the tone drifts from reassuring into dismissive — and then rewrite it to the standard you'd defend to a supervisor.

The written rationale usually matters as much as the artifact. Labs are training the model to recognize why a draft fails, not only that it did, so "the risk framing is wrong" is worth far less than "it says 'no cause for alarm' before stating what's known, which reads as concealment when case counts rise next week."

What the screen looks for

  • Real ownership, not adjacency: materials you drafted and put your name behind, ideally under time pressure during an actual incident
  • Fluency with the genre conventions — CERC principles, plain-language and readability standards, health literacy practice, translation and accessibility constraints
  • File craft: clean tables and formulas, decks that survive being forwarded without you presenting them, documents structured for a reader who skims
  • Judgment about uncertainty — what you say when you don't yet know, and how you avoid language you'll have to retract

Logistics

Fully remote and asynchronous, 5–20 hours per week with room to take more. Work is claimed from a task queue on your own schedule; there are no standing meetings, though some projects run on weekly delivery windows. Screening includes an AI voice interview covering your background and a few scenario probes, and most candidates are asked for a short writing or evaluation sample. The $90/hour figure reflects rates observed on this platform for this specialty and is not guaranteed.
