What the work actually involves
You receive a multi-part mechanical assembly as a native FreeCAD file — not a rendered image or a PDF drawing. Your first job is to understand it: how the parts mate, what the design intent was, which dimensions are functionally load-bearing and which are arbitrary. Then you write a set of question-and-answer pairs about that assembly. The questions have to be objective (one defensible answer), non-guessable (a model can't shortcut it from the part names or common-sense priors), and technically precise. Expect to cover mechanical function, design rationale, tolerance and fit reasoning, kinematic constraints, and dimensional relationships.
The hard part is not the CAD. It's writing questions that are simultaneously answerable from the file and not answerable without it. A question like "what material is this bracket?" fails if the answer is guessable from context. A question about why a shoulder bolt was chosen over a socket head cap screw at a specific joint, with the answer grounded in the actual geometry, is the kind of item that earns a pass.
What the platform screens for
- Genuine assembly-level fluency, not part modelling. Screeners probe whether you reason about constraints, degrees of freedom, and assembly sequence — follow-ups go deeper than the first answer.
- Ability to open and navigate FreeCAD. Prior FreeCAD experience is preferred but SolidWorks, CATIA, Inventor, NX or Creo backgrounds are accepted; you'll be expected to get productive in FreeCAD quickly on your own.
- Written precision. Expect a work sample. Ambiguous phrasing, questions with two defensible answers, or answers that hedge are the most common rejection reason.
- Realistic throughput. Coordinators want to know how many assemblies per week you can actually deliver, not an aspirational number.
Logistics
Fully remote, contractor engagement, asynchronous. Work is assigned in batches of assemblies with agreed turnaround windows rather than fixed shifts, so you set your own hours — but occasional synchronous calls with project coordinators to resolve ambiguities are part of the role. Volume varies with customer demand; treat it as a supplement or a variable-load engagement rather than a guaranteed full-time pipeline.
