What the work actually involves
You open a native FreeCAD assembly — several parts, mates and constraints, sketches with parametric history — and figure out what an engineer would genuinely have to reason about to answer a question correctly. Then you write it: the question, the exact answer, and usually a short justification pointing to the geometry, feature tree, or engineering function that makes the answer the only defensible one. Expect several items per assembly, covering dimensional interrogation, degrees of freedom and assembly relations, clearance and interference, tolerance and fit implications, manufacturing intent, and function-from-form inference.
The hard part is not CAD fluency, it is question design. Items must be objective (one answer, checkable), non-guessable (a model cannot pattern-match its way to the answer from wording or plausibility), and unambiguous (no hidden assumption about units, datum, or which instance of a repeated part you mean). You will also log ambiguities you find in the source assemblies — misnamed bodies, broken constraints, under-defined sketches — because that feedback shapes later batches.
What the screen looks for
- Real engineering background: mechanical, aerospace, or industrial design, with hands-on time in multi-part assemblies and engineering drawings rather than single-part modelling.
- Ability to read a feature tree and constraint set, not just a rendered solid.
- Evidence you can write assessment-grade content — exam items, certification banks, training material, technical specs — where wording precision mattered.
- Willingness to be pushed under follow-up. Screeners will ask why your answer is the only answer, and vague responses read as thin depth.
- FreeCAD specifically is a plus, not a gate; SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, NX, Inventor, or Onshape experience transfers if you can work in FreeCAD's paradigm.
Logistics
Remote contractor engagement, largely asynchronous, with written feedback loops and occasional calls to clarify requirements. Work is batched — you take assemblies, deliver items, get reviewed, iterate. Observed pay for this listing is $40–80/hr, typically set by depth of assembly experience and authoring track record; it is not guaranteed. You need a machine that can run FreeCAD on non-trivial assemblies without stalling, and enough weekly hours to hit review cycles rather than dipping in once a fortnight.
