What the work involves
You receive native FreeCAD assembly files — multi-part aerospace hardware such as brackets, actuator housings, control-surface linkages, or structural sub-assemblies — and open them to understand how the thing is built and why. From each assembly you author several questions that a competent engineer could only answer by actually inspecting the model: mating relationships, constraint schemes, feature order, hole patterns and their tolerance implications, load paths, clearance and interference conditions, fastener callouts, and the design intent behind a given cut or fillet. Each question ships with a clear, well-researched answer that cites the specific parts, features, or dimensions it relies on.
The hard part is not writing questions — it is writing questions that are objective and non-guessable. A question answerable by a plausible guess, or one where two engineers would defend different answers, is a defect. You will also be asked to keep items program-agnostic (no dependence on a specific vendor's PDM conventions) and to contribute to documentation and feedback loops so later batches are cleaner than earlier ones.
What the platform screens for
micro1's screen is AI-led and follows up on whatever you claim. Expect to be asked which CAD systems you have driven in anger, what kinds of assemblies you have actually built or reviewed, and then to talk through how you would interrogate a given assembly. Depth shows up in vocabulary and specifics: constraint versus assembly-mate terminology, datum schemes and GD&T, parametric feature trees, sheet-metal versus machined-part conventions, why an assembly failed to rebuild. No AI or annotation background is required, and FreeCAD experience is a plus rather than a gate — but you should be able to say plainly how quickly you could get productive in it.
Logistics
- Fully remote contractor engagement, coordinated asynchronously with occasional live calls to clarify requirements.
- Work is typically batch-based: you are assigned assemblies and turn around question sets, so hours are flexible within deadlines.
- Pay observed in the $40–80/hr range, varying with depth of engineering background and demonstrated writing quality; not guaranteed.
- You need a machine capable of opening and manipulating non-trivial CAD assemblies, plus a headset for occasional calls.
