What the work actually involves

Once you're in the pool, tasks arrive as discrete units rather than a standing job. A typical batch might ask you to write a prompt hard enough that a strong model fails it — a mid-year convention on a depreciation schedule, a DCF where the terminal value assumptions quietly contradict the forecast period, a comparables set that needs adjustment for capital structure. Other batches are pure evaluation: you read two model responses to a valuation question and rank them, or you audit a single response line by line and mark exactly where the reasoning breaks. Rating a wrong answer as wrong is the easy part; the value is in explaining that the WACC was right but applied to unlevered cash flows inconsistently.

Subtle errors are the point. Models are fluent enough that surface plausibility is no longer a signal — the failures are sign conventions on working capital changes, double-counting stock comp, confusing basis points with percentage points, using diluted share counts inconsistently across periods, or citing accounting treatment that changed under a more recent standard. Reviewers are looking for people who catch these without being told what to look for.

What the assessment screens for

The qualifying assessment is unpaid and gates entry to the pool. Expect it to test whether you can do the arithmetic and the reasoning, and whether you can write down why an answer is wrong in a way another reviewer could verify. Vague critique ("the reasoning seems off") scores poorly; a specific, reproducible correction scores well. Depth in at least one area — modeling, valuation, technical accounting, credit, or markets — matters more than shallow coverage of all of them.

Logistics

  • Fully remote and asynchronous; no scheduled calls once you're working.
  • Volume is project-driven and irregular — some weeks nothing, some weeks substantial batches.
  • Rates vary by project complexity and specialization within the quoted band; the band is what has been observed, not a guarantee.
  • The assessment itself takes real time and is not compensated. Go in knowing that.
