What the work involves

This is applied, hands-on work in Unreal Engine rather than written commentary about it. Contributors carry out realistic tasks in the editor — Blueprint logic, level and lighting setup, material graphs, Sequencer work, asset import and retargeting, Niagara systems, packaging and build settings — and capture what they did as high-resolution screenshots alongside precise step descriptions. Some tasks ask you to reproduce a workflow end to end; others ask you to judge whether an AI-produced answer would actually work if a technical artist followed it in the editor.

The value you bring is knowing where Unreal actually bites: the difference between what a menu implies and what the engine does, which node ordering breaks at runtime, why a build succeeds in PIE and fails packaged. Work is task-based and delivered through Mercor's platform, so quality is judged on whether a reviewer can follow your capture and reproduce the same state.

What the platform screens for

  • Immediate access. Unreal installed on a Windows PC you can open now. Screen-shares or live capture requests are common in screening.
  • Display capability. Captures above 2.5 MP — a single QHD/4K/ultrawide monitor, or two 1920×1080+ displays captured as one spanning image. One 1080p screen alone does not qualify.
  • Depth under follow-up. Generalist here means breadth across Unreal's subsystems, not a single specialty. Expect probes into areas you didn't raise yourself.
  • Evaluation judgment. Whether you can tell a confidently-worded wrong answer from a correct one, and articulate why with reference to engine behaviour.

Logistics

Remote and asynchronous, contractor basis, work drawn from a queue rather than assigned on a fixed schedule. Contributors commonly report 10–20 hours a week, with more available during active project windows. Pay in the $30–40/hr band has been observed on comparable Mercor application-expert projects; rates vary by project, task type, and assessed depth, and are not guaranteed. Your own hardware, your own licence, your own Windows install — the engine's free tier is acceptable so long as you can genuinely launch it.
