Finance evaluation often turns on a small but consequential distinction: margin versus markup, a balance versus a flow, a historical result versus a forecast. The reviewer’s job is to locate that distinction and show what it changes. This guide uses fictional calculations to demonstrate review craft, not to recommend a financial decision.

What a finance reviewer checks

AreaReview question
DefinitionsDoes the response use the metric the prompt actually names?
InputsDo values, periods and units match the supplied material?

AssumptionsWhich assumptions are supplied, inferred or invented?
InterpretationDoes the conclusion go beyond what the calculation establishes?
EvidenceCan the claim be traced to the relevant statement, table or note?

The denominator changes the answer

◆ Evaluation example

Prompt
Illustrative task. A fictional product has revenue of 200 units and cost of goods sold of 150 units. Calculate gross profit margin using (revenue minus cost of goods sold) divided by revenue.
Response A
Gross profit is 50 units. Gross profit margin is 50 divided by 200, or 25%.
Response B
Gross profit is 50 units. Gross profit margin is 50 divided by 150, or about 33.3%.
Decision
Response A
Why
A uses the formula specified in the prompt. B divides profit by cost, giving a markup calculation instead. Both find the same profit, but B answers a different metric. These figures are fictional arithmetic inputs, not pay figures or market data.

Read the notes as well as the headline

A table may report values in thousands, use a fiscal rather than calendar year, or exclude a business unit. Check the labels before comparing numbers. When a model cites a financial statement, trace the specific claim to the relevant line and period. A company-wide figure does not automatically support a segment-level claim.

If the task is restricted to supplied documents, flag missing support within that evidence boundary. If outside research is allowed, record which source version you used. Avoid replacing the task’s assumptions with a real-world estimate simply because you know a different figure.

◆ Common mistake

Rewarding sophisticated vocabulary over a reproducible calculation

A response can mention sensitivity analysis and still use the wrong denominator. Verify the operative calculation before judging the presentation.

Check the distance between result and recommendation

A fictional model may show a positive result under one assumption set. That does not establish that the outcome is certain, that the assumptions are realistic or that a specific person should act on it. Score the answer against the prompt’s scope and the project’s rules for financial content.

Finance submission check

  • →Confirm the metric and formula.
  • →Check units and reporting periods.
  • →Reproduce the material calculation.
  • →Identify unsupported assumptions.
  • →Separate arithmetic correctness from the interpretation.
  • →Use the current project rubric for error severity.
