What the work involves
You author tax problems the way a partner would frame them for an associate: a fact pattern with real structuring pressure, a question that has a defensible answer and several plausible wrong ones, and a reference answer that walks through the statutory hook, the regulations, and the authority a practitioner would actually cite. Scenarios span the practice arc — entity choice and transaction structuring, partnership allocations and basis, subchapter C mechanics, cross-border questions under the international provisions, through to examination and controversy postures.
The second half of the work is grading. You read model output on your own or another expert's scenario and score it for technical accuracy, correct identification of controlling authority, and whether the reasoning chain actually supports the conclusion. A large part of the value here is catching answers that are fluent and confident but cite a superseded provision, apply a general rule where a specific one controls, or reach the right number through wrong reasoning. Those failures get written up, not just marked down.
What the platform screens for
- Verifiable credentials. JD, active bar admission in a US jurisdiction, and at least two years of tax practice — firm, in-house, or government. An LLM in Taxation, a CPA, or IRS controversy experience is a plus, not a gate.
- Depth in a named area. Screeners push on one declared specialty until the answers either hold up with specific authority or thin out into generalities. Claiming corporate, partnership, international, and SALT equally is usually a worse outcome than claiming one convincingly.
- Evaluation judgment. Whether you can distinguish a wrong answer from an incompletely supported one, and whether you can articulate why a confident-sounding position is defective.
- Written clarity. Reference answers are read by non-tax reviewers and by training pipelines; reasoning has to be legible on the page without a follow-up call.
Logistics
Fully remote and asynchronous — no client calls, no fixed shifts. Minimum commitment is 10 hours per week, and volume can scale up or down between weeks. Pay is weekly via Stripe at a rate set from your experience and specialty; the $120–200/hr band reflects observed rates rather than a guarantee. Work is assigned within your declared specialty, so an international tax person is not asked to grade estate planning.
