What the work actually involves

You'll be writing claims work the way you'd write it for a file that might be audited: coverage analyses, claim action plans, investigation requests, evaluation summaries, settlement recommendations, and insured or claimant correspondence. Some tasks ask you to construct the scenario from first notice of loss forward — the loss facts, the policy form, the ambiguities a real adjuster would have to resolve. Others hand you a model-generated response and ask you to grade it against a structured rubric on factual accuracy, policy application, claim-handling judgment, and procedural completeness, then explain your scoring in writing that a researcher with no insurance background can act on.

The failure modes you're hunting are specific: the model concludes coverage before verifying the policy was in force, values a roof without a scope or comparable pricing, drafts a reservation-of-rights letter that reads like a denial, misses the subrogation referral, or blends storm damage with long-term wear it should have excluded. Flagging those is the deliverable. Writing "golden" reference responses — what a competent examiner would actually have produced — is the other half.

What the screen looks for

Mercor's screening is AI-led and follow-up heavy. It probes whether your claims experience is hands-on rather than managerial-adjacent: which lines you've carried, what authority you held, how you documented reserves, how you handled a coverage question you weren't authorized to decide. Expect it to press on policy language specifics and on where you'd draw the line between routine adjudication and matters requiring coverage counsel, SIU, or regulatory escalation. Vague summaries of tenure score poorly; named forms, loss types, and dollar ranges score well.

Logistics

  • Fully remote and asynchronous, with onboarding office hours and periodic calibration sessions you're expected to attend
  • Minimum 20 hours per week; the platform states 40+ is preferred
  • Pay observed at $800 per task, not a guaranteed rate or salary; task volume varies by project phase
  • Rolling review, immediate start — carrier examiners, desk and field adjusters, TPA staff, and independents are all in scope
