What the work involves
You will be working through accounting and finance queries of the kind a US small-business owner actually asks — reconciling a QBO account that will not tie out, whether a payment belongs in COGS or opex, how to read a cash-flow statement before a loan application, what to do about a prior-year misclassification. Some are simple help-desk questions; many are data-heavy and require you to work from a trial balance, P&L, or transaction register and produce advisory-grade reasoning, not a one-line answer. Depending on the project stream, you may be writing reference answers, reviewing model output for technical correctness, or both.
The distinguishing feature of this work is that your reasoning is the deliverable. A correct conclusion with no visible path from the source data to the recommendation has limited value — the trace matters as much as the number. You will also be expected to flag where a question cannot be answered responsibly without more information (entity type, accounting basis, state, prior-year treatment) rather than guessing a plausible answer.
What the screening looks for
- Real seniority, named. Turing lists CFO, COO (Finance), Financial Controller, Finance Director, VP Finance, CFO Advisor and Financial Consultant explicitly, and asks that you have advised three or more organizations. Expect to be asked which ones and in what capacity.
- QuickBooks Online as a hands-on tool. Not "familiar with" — screens probe for things only a regular user knows, like how undeposited funds behave or what a bank feed match actually does to the ledger.
- US SMB context. Cash vs. accrual, 1099 handling, S-corp reasonable compensation, sales tax exposure — the questions assume a US framing.
- Judgment on ambiguity. Whether you recognise the question that needs a clarifier before an answer.
Logistics
Fully remote and async, up to 40 hours per week, a stated 10-week duration with extension possible. Selection runs through Turing's Vetsmith Challenge followed by client-side profile screening, so the funnel has two stages and the second is outside Turing's control. Pay is not disclosed in the listing; Turing typically sets hourly rates per project and per seniority tier, so treat any figure you hear elsewhere as observed rather than promised.
