What the work involves

You author plumbing scenarios that start where a real call starts — a symptom, a customer description, maybe a photo or a fixture history — and carry through diagnosis, code check, and repair. Each scenario ships with a reference answer that spells out the reasoning: why you suspect a failed pressure-reducing valve rather than a thermal expansion problem, which UPC or IPC section governs the fix, what venting or trap arm dimension makes the proposed repair legal or not. The second half of the job is grading: you read model output and score it for code compliance, safety, and workmanship, and you write the note explaining exactly where it went wrong.

The highest-value work is catching answers that sound right. Models are fluent about plumbing and frequently wrong in ways a homeowner would never notice — a cross-connection with no backflow protection, an S-trap presented as normal, a water heater T&P discharge routed somewhere it must not go, a drain slope that would either silt up or siphon. Flagging plausible-but-dangerous advice is the core deliverable, not a side task.

What the platform screens for

Expect verification of your journeyman or master license number and jurisdiction, then domain questioning that goes past definitions. Screeners typically ask you to reason through a fault with incomplete information, cite the code basis for a call, and explain where UPC and IPC actually diverge rather than reciting that both exist. Written clarity matters as much as field skill here — the artifact you produce is prose, and reasoning that only makes sense to someone standing next to you does not grade well. Candidates who describe judgment calls, jurisdictional amendments, and cases where they were overruled by an inspector tend to score better than candidates who present every question as having one textbook answer.
