What the work actually is

You author self-contained manufacturing problems with a defensible correct answer, and you review model output against that answer. A typical item might be a takt-time and line-balancing calculation with a stated changeover penalty, an SPC scenario where the chart shows a shift but the process is still within spec, an MRP explosion with a lot-sizing rule, a root-cause exercise off a maintenance log, or a make-versus-buy decision with real constraints attached. The distinguishing feature of good items is that the answer depends on applying a principle to specific numbers and constraints, not on recalling a definition. Alongside authoring, you grade: mark the response, point to the exact step where the reasoning failed, and write the correction a competent process engineer would accept.

What the screen looks for

  • Plant floor specificity. Which processes — injection molding, CNC machining, SMT assembly, continuous chemical, food and beverage? What volumes, what takt, what ERP or MES?
  • Live calculation. OEE, Cpk, EOQ, kanban sizing, line balance, cost of poor quality. Expect a follow-up asking you to name your inputs and assumptions.
  • Judgment on plausible-but-wrong answers. Models produce fluent, textbook-shaped manufacturing prose that quietly violates a constraint or ignores variability. Catching that is the job.
  • Written precision. Feedback that says "incorrect, should be lean" is worthless; feedback that says "the response sized the buffer off average demand and ignored the 3-sigma spread, so the kanban count is understated by roughly 40 percent" is the product.

Logistics

Fully remote, asynchronous, contractor engagement with no fixed shifts. Work arrives in batches; most contributors take between five and twenty hours a week and are paid hourly on submitted and accepted work. A Bachelor's in manufacturing, industrial, mechanical engineering or operations management is stated as the baseline, with equivalent professional experience accepted. Lean Six Sigma certification, a PE licence, and Industry 4.0 or IIoT exposure are stated preferences, not gates. Expect a calibration round early on — your first items get edited, and rate movement within the band tends to follow how little editing your work needs.
