What the work actually involves

MLE Bench evaluates whether AI systems can do the work of a machine learning engineer end to end. Your job sits on the measurement side of that: taking the artifacts these pipelines produce — training logs, inference outputs, submission files, leaderboard scores — and determining whether the numbers mean what they appear to mean. A typical day is writing Python and SQL against structured and semi-structured data, defining or validating a metric, and then digging into the tail: which cases fail, whether the failure is the model's or the harness's, and whether a distribution shift explains a score change that looks like capability.

You will also be asked to help design evaluation scenarios, not just score them. That means proposing tasks drawn from realistic analytics and ML workflows that are hard for the right reasons — genuinely difficult rather than ambiguous, and resistant to shortcuts like leakage or memorized public solutions. Collaboration with ML engineers and researchers is part of the loop, and your analytical artifacts are expected to be reproducible by someone else without you in the room.

What the screening looks for

Turing runs a single 60-minute technical interview with live coding. Expect to write Python and SQL under observation and to talk through your reasoning while doing it. The bar is analytical rigor rather than volume: can you define a metric precisely, spot a data-quality problem before it contaminates a conclusion, reason about whether a difference is real, and explain what you did clearly in English. Candidates with three or more years in a data analyst or analytics engineering seat who have specifically looked at ML outputs — not only business dashboards — screen best.

Logistics

  • Fully remote contractor assignment, no medical or paid leave.
