What the work actually involves
You'll spend most of your time in one of two modes. In authoring mode, you're handed a realistic prompt — a product recall statement, a CEO's talking points for a hostile interview, a quarterly newsletter for 4,000 internal staff — and you produce the document, spreadsheet, or deck a competent professional would deliver, in the actual file format. In evaluation mode, you read what the model produced for the same brief and write a structured critique: what's factually unsupported, what breaks AP style, where the lede is buried, where a quote is fabricated, where the crisis plan skips the legal review step. The written rationale is the product. A rating with no reasoning behind it is worthless to the lab.
Work is prompt-by-prompt and asynchronous. Typical tasks run 30–90 minutes; longer deck and workbook builds are batched. Expect calibration rounds early on, where your grades are compared against other reviewers' and you may be asked to defend or revise a score.
What the screen is looking for
- Specific, checkable history. Named outlets, named employers, the kinds of documents you shipped and who signed off on them. Vague "strategic communications leadership" language dies under follow-up.
- Editorial standards you can actually cite. AP style, house style guides, corrections policy, embargo conventions, disclosure norms.
- Judgment under a bad brief. Real comms work involves an executive who wants a line you can't defend. The screen probes how you handled that.
- File craft. Not just writing — pivot tables in a coverage tracker, a deck that reads without narration, a memo that fits on one page.
Logistics
Fully remote, own schedule, 5–20 hours weekly with room to take more if the queue supports it. The interview includes an AI voice screen — a spoken conversation where a system asks follow-up questions based on what you just said, so rehearsed paragraphs work against you. Pay is the rate observed on this listing at the time of posting and is not guaranteed; rates on these programs shift by task type and tenure.
