What the work involves
This is an exploratory research engagement rather than a data-labeling task. You will work alongside a small research team on advanced mathematical formulations, writing and critiquing proofs, and then stepping back to identify the structural patterns those proofs share — the recurring moves, the load-bearing lemmas, the places where an argument generalizes. Those patterns get written up as reusable specifications intended to inform technical architecture and formal systems work, which means a significant share of your output is prose and structured documentation, not just mathematics on a page.
Day to day, expect a mix of solo problem attack, written critique of colleagues' arguments, and synchronous discussion with people who are technically strong but not necessarily algebraic geometers. The ability to hold a scheme-theoretic or cohomological argument at two levels at once — rigorous for specialists, faithful-but-legible for everyone else — is the core skill being purchased here. Problems are described as high-risk and exploratory, so partial results, sharp negative results, and honest accounts of where an approach broke are all expected deliverables.
What the screening looks for
Turing's process starts with a Job Interest Form for shortlisted candidates, followed by contact for onboarding. Platform screens of this kind press on verifiable specifics: the PhD and where it was completed, the subfield inside algebraic geometry you actually work in, named publications in peer-reviewed journals, and whether you can talk about your own results without retreating into abstraction. Expect follow-up questions that go one layer deeper than your first answer — this is the main filter. Also expect direct questions about formalization exposure (Lean, Coq, Isabelle) and about whether you can genuinely commit four hours of PST overlap.
Logistics
- Contractor engagement, fully remote, up to four weeks total.
- Minimum four hours per day; up to 40 hours per week available.
- Four hours of daily overlap with PST required regardless of your timezone.
- Pay band is not disclosed in the listing; Turing typically sets rates per project and per candidate profile.
