The work
You will design technically difficult problems grounded in real materials research and engineering, including structure-property relationships, processing, characterization, failure analysis, or computational materials. Each task needs realistic constraints and supporting data, a correct solution with traceable reasoning, and grading criteria that another expert can apply consistently.
What the screening covers
micro1 is looking for a master’s or PhD holder with either principal, staff, or fellow-level experience in industrial or national laboratory research, or a faculty appointment at a leading university. The AI interview is likely to test whether you can discuss specific work you personally owned, reason through follow-up questions in a materials subdomain, identify plausible but incorrect analysis, and distinguish a difficult problem from an ambiguous or ungradable one.
Review responsibilities
You may review problems written by other contributors, checking assumptions, units, data sufficiency, physical mechanisms, and the soundness of the proposed solution. Publications, patents, or technical leadership are advantageous, as is prior AI or LLM evaluation experience, but the latter is not required.
Logistics
The contract is fully remote and intended to fit alongside an existing role. The listing describes the commitment as flexible but does not state typical weekly hours or explicitly confirm that all work is asynchronous.
Pay band: $85–185/hr
