What the work actually involves

You author self-contained legal tasks — a realistic fact pattern or document set, a prompt an AI model would plausibly be asked, and a gold-standard answer that a partner would not have to redraft. In practice that means things like marking up an indemnity clause against a stated risk allocation, building a privilege-log dispute walkthrough, tracing a circuit split through a research memo, or drafting a discovery response with defensible objections. A second half of the role is evaluation: reading other experts' tasks and model outputs, catching legal errors, unstated assumptions, fabricated authority, and answers that are technically correct but useless to a practising associate.

Everything runs against a rubric set by a Functional SME Lead, and everything passes senior review. Calibration feedback is not optional decoration — your acceptance rate depends on absorbing it, and reviewers will reject work that is well-written but off-rubric.

What the screen looks for

  • Verifiable practice history. Active US bar admission, and 3–8 years of real matter work — ideally associate-level, where you were the one drafting and citing rather than supervising.
  • Depth under follow-up. Expect the screener to pick one area you name and push two or three layers down: which jurisdiction, which standard, what you'd do if the clause were silent.
  • Evaluation judgment. Can you separate a wrong answer from an answer you'd have written differently, and articulate why in rubric terms?
  • Citation discipline. Hallucinated or mis-shepardised authority is the single fastest way to fail review.

Logistics and pay, stated plainly

Fully remote, contract, pay-per-task. The observed rate is $400 per approved task with an average handling time of 10–12 hours — so the realistic effective rate is roughly $33–40/hour, not $400/hour, and only approved tasks pay. Coordination is on PST; the drafting itself is async, so you set your own hours around deadlines. Volume is not guaranteed and typically depends on pod needs and your acceptance rate. Start date is immediate.
