What the work actually involves

You will spend most of your time producing and judging contract work product rather than advising a client. A typical task might ask you to redline an MSA clause set from a counterparty's position, then write out the reasoning behind each edit — why the limitation of liability carve-out matters, what the fallback position is, when you would concede. Other tasks hand you a model's attempt at the same exercise and ask you to score it: did it catch the uncapped indemnity, did it hallucinate a term that isn't in the document, did it flag a risk that is real but commercially irrelevant? You will also be asked to write the grading rubrics themselves, so that another reviewer applying them to the same output lands on the same score.

The subject matter is technology transactions: MSAs, NDAs, DPAs, SaaS and licensing terms, and on some projects ISDAs and derivatives documentation. Deliverables are heavily written. A redline with no annotation is not a completed task — the explanation of why is the training signal.

What the screen looks for

  • Verifiable in-house depth. Three years minimum, in-house rather than purely law-firm, with named deal types you personally negotiated. Screeners follow up on specifics, so be ready to walk through a real negotiation position at clause level (scrubbed of client identity).
  • Consistency of judgment. Can you articulate a standard and then apply it the same way twice? Rubric-writing is a large part of this role and inconsistent graders get filtered early.
  • Willingness to be graded yourself. Tasks are reviewed and signed off; work that misses spec is returned. Candidates who bristle at that dynamic tend not to last.

Logistics and pay

Contractor, fully remote, asynchronous. Volume is part-time and variable — projects ramp and pause with client demand, so treat this as a supplement to practice rather than a replacement. Compensation is per completed and approved task, not per hour logged; the stated band reflects what experts working at or near the 3.5-hour average handling time have observed, and it moves against you if your tasks need rework. There is no guaranteed minimum volume.
