What the work actually involves
You write briefs a real client might send — a wordmark for a specialty coffee roaster, a two-page editorial spread, a packaging panel with a legal copy block — and then evaluate what image models produce against them. Each judgment ships with a written critique that explains the typographic and layout reasoning: why the kerning breaks at display size, why the baseline grid is inconsistent across columns, why the mark reads fine at 400px and collapses at favicon scale. The most valuable output is often the flagged near-miss: an image with convincing lighting, texture and color that nonetheless renders garbled letterforms, mismatched stroke weights across a logotype, or a hierarchy that puts the least important element in the optical center.
Work is task-based and async. You pick up batches, submit written evaluations, and get feedback from reviewers on whether your reasoning was legible and specific enough to train against. There is no live client, no revision cycle, no stakeholder call.
What the screening looks for
AfterQuery's screen is AI-led and probes depth by follow-up. Expect to be asked not whether you know typography but to name specifics: which typeface you'd choose for a given constraint and what its x-height and aperture do at small sizes, how you'd diagnose spacing problems in a logotype, what distinguishes a tracking issue from a bad type choice. Portfolio claims get tested — if you list identity systems, be ready to describe the grid, the type pairing, and the failure mode you designed around.
- Verifiable background — 2+ years professional practice, named tools, named projects
- Critique quality — can you say why something fails in terms another designer could act on
- Calibration — do you separate personal taste from a rule violation
- Availability honesty — a real 10 hours, stated plainly
Logistics
Remote and fully async, worldwide unless a specific project states otherwise. Ten hours a week is the floor; many contributors work more in some weeks and less in others without penalty. Pay is weekly via Stripe at a rate set from your experience and portfolio — the $40–80/hr band is what has been observed on this listing, not a guarantee. Written English good enough to document design reasoning clearly is a hard requirement, since the writing is the deliverable.
