What the work involves
Each task is a self-contained planning exercise. You're handed a mock file set — actuals, driver schedules, department budgets, bookings or pipeline data — and asked to produce a finished work product: a bottoms-up annual budget with consolidation and approval paths, a multi-year long-range plan, a rolling reforecast of P&L, cash flow and KPIs, a headcount plan with hiring pacing, a capex plan with project approvals and payback prioritization, a monthly management reporting pack with variance commentary, or a product/customer/segment profitability analysis including the cost allocation methodology.
The grading rubric rewards reasoning as much as output. A variance that is calculated but not explained scores poorly; so does a forecast whose drivers and assumptions aren't documented well enough for a reviewer to reconstruct them. Expect to write short narrative sections alongside the model — the commentary is part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.
What the platform screens for
- Real ownership of a plan or reforecast cycle at an operating company, not adjacent exposure. Screens probe which cycle you ran, who consumed the output, and where your numbers moved a decision.
- Advanced Excel modeling judgment: structure, driver logic, sensitivity handling, and how you keep a model auditable.
- The ability to hold up under follow-up on a specific variance — root cause, whether it's timing or run-rate, and what you told the business partner.
- Note the scope boundary: this is planning and forecasting work. Month-end close, reconciliations and controllership background won't map to the rubric.
Logistics
Fully remote and asynchronous. Work is task-based at an observed rate of around $2,000 per task; that figure reflects what has been posted for this listing and is not a guarantee of volume or ongoing rate. Tasks are substantial — plan on multiple focused sessions per deliverable rather than an hour here and there — and most contributors treat this as part-time work alongside a full-time finance role. Familiarity with Anaplan, Adaptive Insights or Pigment is a plus but Excel remains the primary medium.
