The work
This remote contractor role involves interpreting product requirements, building and annotating parametric 3D models, and designing robust multi-part assemblies. Day-to-day contributions may include selecting assembly architecture, defining mating strategies, evaluating tolerance stack-ups, documenting DFM considerations, and reviewing sample designs for feasibility and modeling quality.
CAD and instructional focus
The project prefers mastery of a major parametric CAD package: SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion, Onshape, or Solid Edge. Familiarity with FreeCAD is a plus. You will need to make expert decisions visible by explaining feature strategy, component placement, trade-offs, failure modes, and design rationale in a form that can support AI learning workflows. Mentoring, teaching, or other experience enabling CAD users is preferred, but prior AI experience is not required.
Screening
Expect the platform screen to test whether you can substantiate your CAD background with specific assemblies, constraints, tolerances, and manufacturing decisions. It may also probe how you distinguish a merely valid model from one that is stable, editable, manufacturable, and educationally useful. A recognized CAD credential, such as CSWE/CSWP, Autodesk Certified Instructor/Expert Elite, ASME GDTP, or SOLIDWORKS Champion, is highly valued and may substitute for a formal experience bar.
Logistics
The engagement is remote and includes asynchronous collaboration, written responses, and occasional verbal clarification of complex design choices. The listing does not state typical weekly hours, project duration, or a fixed schedule, so candidates should be ready to describe their realistic availability and response cadence. Pay band: $40–90/hr
