What the work involves

You will record supplied transcripts in British English for a frontier AI lab building audio understanding and generation. The register is narrow and deliberate: neutral to upbeat, clear enunciation, consistent pacing — the voice of a well-trained contact centre agent rather than an audiobook narrator or a character actor. Sessions are self-directed after a kickoff call. You receive transcripts, record them cleanly, do light post-production, and submit files against a naming and format spec.

The detail that trips people up is punctuation. Commas, em dashes, ellipses and full stops in these scripts are instructions about breath and timing, not decoration. Some tasks ask you to read exactly as written, including awkward constructions; others ask you to adjust for natural pacing and flag what you changed. Knowing which mode you are in, and being consistent within a batch, is most of the job.

What the platform screens for

Mercor's screen is AI-led and leans on verifiable facts plus a short recorded sample. Expect questions about where you were born and raised (the listing gates on Great Britain), what is physically in your recording chain, your noise floor and room treatment, and whether you can hold a consistent read across a long session without drift in energy or pace. Professional voice-acting credits help but are explicitly optional — podcast, radio, streaming, comedy and music backgrounds are welcome if the audio is clean. Retake discipline and file hygiene count as much as timbre.

Logistics and pay

  • Fully remote, recorded from your own studio, largely asynchronous after the kickoff call
