What the work involves
This is a single-session audio contribution, not an ongoing engagement. You receive a short script and a written recording guide, record yourself reading it aloud in your everyday English, and upload the file. Most contributors finish in under 15 minutes. The guide covers the practical details that determine whether a take is usable: a quiet room, a consistent distance from the microphone, no background music or television, no post-processing, and a single continuous take rather than stitched fragments.
The recordings feed speech datasets used to test how well systems handle accented English. That purpose shapes what counts as good output: the value is in your natural speech, not in a polished broadcast delivery. Over-enunciating, flattening your accent toward American or British English, or performing the script all reduce the usefulness of the sample.
What the platform screens for
- Authenticity of accent. AfterQuery is explicit that imitated or performed accents are not accepted. Screening typically involves a short spoken sample and questions about where you learned English and where you have lived — an L1 Slovenian background or long-term immersion in Slovenian-speaking environments is what makes a sample genuine.
- Instruction-following in English. You need to read and act on a written guide without hand-holding, since there is no live supervisor on a task this short.
- Basic recording capability. A smartphone microphone is sufficient. What matters is that you can produce a clean file in a quiet space and upload it in the requested format.
Logistics
Fully remote and fully asynchronous, with no scheduled calls. Pay is stated as a flat $50 per accepted submission — observed on the listing, not guaranteed, and contingent on the recording meeting the audio-quality bar described in the guide. Turnaround is quick; batches of this kind usually close within days of opening, so responsiveness after being accepted matters more than long-term availability.
