What the work involves
This is a single-task audio contribution, not an ongoing engagement. You receive a short script and a step-by-step recording guide, record yourself reading it on whatever device you have, and submit the file through AfterQuery's platform. Most contributors finish in under 15 minutes, including reading the instructions and doing a retake if the first pass has background noise. Pay is a flat $50 per accepted submission; the $30/hr band on this card is the platform's stated rate context, and effective hourly rates on short tasks like this vary with how quickly you work and whether a re-record is requested.
What the platform screens for
The screen is short and largely factual. Two things carry real weight. First, accent authenticity: AfterQuery wants English as it is actually spoken by people who grew up with or around Maltese, not a performed accent. Expect to be asked directly where you learned Maltese, where you have lived, and how you use both languages day to day — and expect the recording itself to be checked against those answers. Second, whether you can follow written instructions unsupervised. There is no onboarding call and no producer on the line, so the screen probes whether you will read the guide properly rather than improvising your own setup.
Recording conditions
- Equipment: a smartphone or a computer with a working microphone is sufficient; no studio, interface, or external mic required.
- Environment: a quiet room matters more than gear. Traffic noise, fans, and echo-heavy kitchens are the usual reasons a take gets rejected.
- Delivery: upload through the designated platform in the format the guide specifies — do not email files or substitute your own format.
Logistics
Fully remote, fully asynchronous, no scheduled hours. Quick-turnaround means the project window is short: if you are selected, expect to submit within a day or two rather than a week or two. Prior narration or voice-over experience is a plus but is not required, and it will not compensate for a non-native accent.
