What the work actually is

This is a single recording engagement of about four hours, with a possible second session of similar length if the client asks for more material — not guaranteed, and you should plan around the first session only. You'll work through scripts that span conversational lines, narrative passages, and instructional copy, delivering each cleanly and often more than once with variation in emotion, emphasis or pace. The output feeds a text-to-speech system, so the bar is consistency: the same accent, the same mic distance, the same energy from the first file to the last. Mouth noise, chair creaks, a fan cycling on, or a voice that drifts brighter after the third hour all cost re-records.

The critical term is stated plainly in the listing: your voice may be cloned to power the client's internal CX AI agent. The listing states recordings will not be sold, licensed, or reused for other products or datasets. If cloning is not something you're comfortable with, this is not the role — don't apply and then raise it later.

What the screen looks for

Mercor's application is AI-led and usually includes recorded audio. Expect to be judged on three things at once: whether the accent is authentically South African rather than a general neutral or transatlantic read, whether your room and chain are clean enough that raw files need no rescue, and whether you can take direction — shift to corporate, then energetic, then calm — without the accent or the mic position sliding. Prior voice work helps but isn't required; newcomers with a genuinely clear voice and a treated space are explicitly in scope. Be concrete about your gear: interface, microphone model, pop filter, what the room is and how you've deadened it, and your typical noise floor.
