What the work actually involves

This is not a piecework evaluation task — it is a full-time engineering seat inside an enterprise client's platform organization, with Cincinnatus LLC acting as employer of record. Day to day you're designing and shipping backend services that sit in front of millions of daily users: REST and GraphQL API layers, server-to-server integrations, and performance-sensitive modules where Rust is the right tool. Expect the ordinary rhythm of a mature product team — solution design discussions, code review, CI/CD, on-call-adjacent defect triage, and performance monitoring — alongside partnership with UX, Product, Business, and Analytics counterparts who will ask you to explain trade-offs without jargon.

The AI dimension is real but practical. You'll be integrating generative and ML capabilities into production services (latency budgets, fallback behaviour, cost per call, prompt/response handling at the service layer) and using AI coding tools to move faster yourself. Mercor lists this under coding because the screen is engineering-depth-first; the AI work is a feature of the product, not the job description's centre of gravity.

What the screen looks for

Mercor's AI-led interview probes for production specifics, then follows up. Generic "I've used Node for years" collapses quickly under a question about event loop blocking or backpressure. The three areas that consistently separate candidates: genuine Rust exposure in something shipped or load-bearing (not a tutorial or a side project), web fundamentals at the HTTP-semantics level — caching headers, cookie scoping, session handling, retry and timeout policy between services — and evidence of senior ownership, meaning you scoped, decided, and carried consequences rather than picked up tickets.

Logistics

  • Commitment: 40 hours/week, weekdays. This is not stackable with another full-time role.
  • Employment: W-2 through Cincinnatus LLC, placed within the client's engineering org as extended workforce; payroll, benefits, and compliance sit with Cincinnatus.
  • Pay: $45–65/hr as observed on the platform; the band typically tracks Rust depth and seniority evidence rather than raw years.
  • Work style: team-embedded and collaborative, not async solo work — expect standing meetings and overlap with the client team's core hours.
