You author engineering problems at the edge of what current models can do, then judge whether their answers hold up. A typical batch might ask you to build a shaft-design problem with a fatigue-life requirement, a compressible-flow question where the nozzle chokes, or a heat exchanger sizing task with an LMTD correction factor — and then write the full worked solution, with units, assumptions, and the intermediate values a grader would need. The second half of the job is evaluation: reading two model responses side by side and deciding which is better, or marking exactly where a plausible-looking derivation went wrong. Much of the value you add is catching answers that are numerically close but physically wrong — a negative entropy change, a factor of safety computed against yield when the load is cyclic, a Reynolds number that puts the flow in the wrong regime than the correlation assumes.

Screeners also probe calibration: whether you can distinguish a genuinely wrong answer from one that took a different but defensible modeling path, since penalizing valid alternatives is a common failure mode among new reviewers. A degree in mechanical engineering or a near neighbour (aerospace, mechatronics, engineering mechanics) is the usual baseline; industry design experience, a PE, or graduate work in a specialty area strengthens the file.
