What the work actually involves

You receive a task package built around a realistic data-center scenario: a chilled-water plant serving a liquid-cooled hall, a CDU selection with a mismatched approach temperature, a 2N electrical topology with an ambiguous single-line, a Level 4 functional performance test script that skips a failure mode. Your job is to work the problem as an engineer would, then work backwards through the artifacts. Do the equipment schedules agree with the calculations? Is the ASHRAE or NFPA reference the current edition, and is it being applied to the right occupancy? Does the sequence of operation actually recover the load on a chiller trip, or does it deadlock? Is the deliverable something a real design team could produce from the documents provided?

When you find a gap, you fix it — rewriting the prompt, adding the missing constraint, correcting the submittal data, tightening acceptance criteria so a grader can distinguish a defensible answer from a lucky one. You then validate the corrected task end to end and write up findings clearly enough that a non-MEP reviewer understands why the original was wrong.

What the screen is looking for

  • Depth in at least one mission-critical discipline (mechanical, electrical, plumbing/process, BAS/controls, or Cx) with working literacy across the others, since data-center tasks rarely stay in one lane
  • Evidence you have owned real projects — plant capacities, redundancy schemes, commissioning levels, the specific standards you work to — rather than general HVAC familiarity
  • Willingness to say a task is unsalvageable, and to explain why, instead of patching around a bad premise
  • Written precision: findings are the deliverable, and vague prose fails

Logistics

Fully remote and asynchronous, roughly 5–10 hours per week to start, with immediate onboarding. Pay is observed at $100–140/hr depending on experience and discipline fit; it is not guaranteed and varies by project. Expect to read large document sets — drawings, schedules, calcs, submittals, and machine-readable data — so a real screen and comfortable PDF/CAD viewing setup matter more than any particular software licence. PE registration or a commissioning credential (CxA, CCP, ACG, QCxP) is preferred, not required.
