What the work involves

You receive model-generated legal content — memo-style analyses, client-facing explanations, statutory interpretations, multi-step reasoning chains — and judge whether it holds up. That means checking citations against primary authority rather than secondary summaries, catching reasoning that reaches a defensible conclusion through an indefensible route, and flagging jurisdiction errors, superseded authority, and confidently stated propositions that no source supports. Some tasks ask for a rating plus written justification; others ask you to rewrite the output so it would survive a partner's review. A recurring pattern is content that is fluent and wrong, which is harder to catch than content that is visibly bad.

What the platform screens for

Mercor's intake is resume plus a short practice-area form, followed by an AI-led interview for applicants who clear the paper bar. The gates are concrete: a JD from an ABA-accredited US law school, an active US bar license in good standing, and roughly three or more years of client- or matter-facing practice. Beyond credentials, the screen probes whether you actually research — can you name the authority you'd pull for a given question, distinguish binding from persuasive, and explain how you'd verify a proposition outside your specialty. Generalist exposure helps, because tasks rarely stay inside one practice area. Screeners also listen for writing instinct: whether you can restate a doctrinal point in plain language without flattening the qualifications that matter.
