What the work actually is
You are not advising clients or running a desk. You are authoring the problems a frontier model is expected to fail, then writing the reference answer that defines what "correct" means. A typical day mixes original task production — a carve-out valuation with contested working-capital adjustments, an ASC 606 revenue recognition edge case, a market-timing argument that hinges on a misread of the yield curve — with review of other SMEs' submissions. Review is the larger share: you are checking whether a model, a rubric, and a colleague's gold answer actually agree, and where they diverge, deciding which one is wrong.
The pod spans a wide occupational surface: financial and investment analysts, financial managers, actuaries, accountants and auditors, tax advisors, management consultants. You will not be personally expert in all of it. The job is knowing the difference between a domain you can adjudicate and one where you must defer or escalate — and the listing names escalation of genuine edge cases and rubric ambiguities as an explicit responsibility, not a failure mode.
What the screen is looking for
Turing's screening for SME lead roles probes institutional seniority that is verifiable, not asserted. Expect follow-ups that push past the title: what standard you set, who it bound, what happened when someone disagreed with you. The written component matters disproportionately — executive-level prose is part of the product here, because a gold-standard solution is read by annotators and by models alike, and ambiguity in the write-up propagates into the training signal. Prior AI evaluation or annotation experience is preferred but genuinely not required; calibration instinct from reviewing junior work transfers well.
Logistics
- Contractor engagement, up to 10 weeks, remote.
- Minimum 4 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week, with at least 4 hours overlapping PST.
- Pay band undisclosed by the platform; Turing typically sets SME lead rates individually at offer stage.
- Process: shortlisted candidates receive a Job Interest Form, then onboarding steps for those selected.
