The work
You will design one challenging database engineering task grounded in real implementation work. Day-to-day activities include creating a reproducible repository or environment, implementing the reference solution, writing tests for correctness and relevant failure modes, measuring performance, and refining the task with technical reviewers.
What the screen measures
The self-paced assessment uses recorded verbal responses and a coding exercise to verify database-systems depth rather than general SQL knowledge. Expect follow-up on concrete implementation decisions involving storage engines, query execution, optimization, transactions, replication, retries, concurrency, or other low-latency systems, as well as how you distinguish genuine correctness from a solution that only passes simple tests.
Practical setup
The role is structured for remote delivery. The assessment takes about 25 minutes and requires a laptop or desktop with a camera, microphone, entire-screen sharing, your own editor and terminal, Python 3.8+, and a compiler for C, C++, Rust, Go, or Java. It must be completed independently without outside AI assistance.
Timing and selection
Applications close Friday, October 9, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific, and the first three qualifying applicants will be selected for the initial pilot. The selected expert will complete one task requiring approximately 25 hours, with delivery due Tuesday, October 13, 2026, followed by technical review and feedback.
Pay band: $2200/task
