What the work involves
You take a design task — sometimes a written spec, sometimes a sketch, sometimes a reference part — and produce a model and drawing set to the standard you would hand a machinist. Alongside the geometry, you document the reasoning: why this sketch plane, why this feature order, why this tolerance. That documentation is the actual product for a lot of these tasks, because the buyer is training a system to reproduce expert modeling judgment, not just to output an STL. Other tasks run the other direction: you receive an existing model or a model produced by an AI system and evaluate it for parametric structure, drawing completeness, GD&T sanity, and manufacturability, then write up what is wrong and how a competent designer would fix it.
Expect variety across industries — consumer product enclosures one week, a weldment or sheet-metal bracket the next. Tasks are scoped independently and you pick them up as they appear rather than being staffed onto a long project.
What the platform screens for
- Named platform depth. Which CAD system, how many years, what kinds of parts. Vague "proficient in SolidWorks" answers get followed up hard.
- Model structure, not just model appearance. Feature trees that rebuild cleanly, sketches that are fully defined, mates and references that survive a dimension change.
- Drafting standard fluency. ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS, view selection, datum schemes, what actually belongs on a drawing versus in the model.
- Evaluation judgment. Can you look at someone else's model and separate a real defect from a stylistic difference, and rank defects by consequence.
- Written clarity. Your critique has to be legible to someone who is not looking at your screen.
Logistics
Fully remote and asynchronous. You supply your own CAD seat — the platform does not license software for you, so a working commercial, educational, or hobbyist licence appropriate to the task matters. Volume fluctuates; most contributors treat this as a part-time load of roughly 10–20 hours a week, and there is no minimum commitment. Pay is per task with rates in the $75–100/hr band as observed by contributors, and complex assemblies or GD&T-heavy work sit at the top end.
