What the work involves
This is a single-session speech data task, not an ongoing engagement. You receive a short English script and a step-by-step recording guide, record yourself reading it aloud in your own voice, and upload the file through the platform. Most contributors finish in 15 minutes or less, including reading the guide and checking playback. Payment is a flat $50 for one accepted submission; the $30/hr figure is an extrapolation from typical completion time rather than a billed rate.
What the platform screens for
The screen is short and focused on two things. First, authenticity: AfterQuery wants English spoken by people whose accent is genuinely shaped by Japanese as a first or dominant language. Imitated, performed, or exaggerated accents are the main rejection reason, and they are audible to reviewers and to the models trained on this data. Second, whether you can follow written recording instructions unsupervised — quiet room, consistent distance from the mic, no background music or overlapping speech, correct file format, full script read without skipping lines.
- Expect questions about your language background: where you grew up, which language you speak at home, how long you have used English
- Expect a question about your recording setup and the room you would record in
- Expect a question about turnaround — projects like this usually close within days
Logistics
Fully remote and fully asynchronous. No calls, no scheduled sessions, no interview beyond the platform screen. A smartphone recorder is acceptable; you do not need studio equipment, but you do need a space quiet enough that speech is the only thing on the track. Because it is a one-off flat-fee task, treat it as a low-commitment way to get onto AfterQuery's contributor roster — repeat invitations to similar audio and annotation projects are the realistic upside, not the $50 itself.
